+ What exactly is peer support?
Peer support provides an open and supportive space for individuals to come together and have honest discussions about mental health and academic stress. People listen and empathize, share tools and resources, and learn from each other’s wisdom and life experience. It allows for meaningful, relatable conversations about struggles and the process of recovery that provide support to people across different stages in their mental health journey.
Some groups will also benefit from a guest expert to discuss and ask questions about a particular topic.
+ Who runs the groups?
Facilitators trained in peer support and suicide prevention lead group meetings. They are not mental health experts and are tasked to ensure group chemistry and cohesion, while also helping to provide structure and flow to each meeting.
+ Is this confidential?
There is a confidentiality code that each person agrees to before joining a meeting. What is discussed in the meeting stays there. We do not let strangers in without signing up and do our best to create a trusting environment. However, we cannot guarantee group confidentiality legally, as we can in therapy sessions. Discretion is advised.
+ Where does each meeting take place?
Each meeting is run on Zoom with at least one peer facilitator. Once you sign up for the group that suits your needs, you will get more information directly. These are not passive groups, with people joining without video or audio. Each person joining has their video on. In the future, we may have more groups that are audio only. Nothing is recorded.
