You don’t need to be depressed to see a therapist.

Did you know that you can improve yourself and learn to manage your feelings and stress better? By meeting and chatting with a therapist — you embark on a journey of self-improvement.

Many people hesitate to go to therapy because of the stigma attached. But you don't need to already be suffering and waiting for a crisis before you speak to a therapist.

What is Therapy?

Therapy or psychotherapy is a process that you undergo with a therapist when you work to change behaviors, beliefs, feelings as well as responses to your emotions. For some individuals, it helps them build healthier relationships with friends and family. Others learn how to regulate their emotions, manage their stress, and deal with conditions like obsessive-compulsive disorder.

In Canada, people registered with an official college in the province can call themselves psychotherapists. This means that they've undergone specific education and training to help others through therapy.

Each therapist may have their own specialty and use different methods to treat their patients. No two therapists will be alike and no two people will have the same exact mental health needs. You and your therapist will work together to find the best ways to help you improve your mental health.

Why You Should Try It

Many therapists see patients concerned about:

  • Work and school stress

  • Anxiety, depression, or other conditions

  • Relationship issues

  • Problems regulating emotions

  • Sleep issues

  • Intrusive thoughts

  • Grief

Even if you aren't currently affected by these issues, it doesn't mean you don't need therapy. Every year, people schedule regular checkups with their doctors and regular cleanings with their dentists. Going to therapy is taking an hour or so out of your schedule to assess and manage your mental health and personal growth.

Intrusive thoughts, anxiety, and other problems can quickly spiral out of control. Rather than waiting for the situation or any of these conditions to worsen, a proactive therapy session can help you work through them before they begin impacting the quality of your life.

No matter who you are or what you are going through, you are not alone. Finding the right therapist and booking your first appointment can be the first step in your healing journey.
